What is Pott’s disease?
This is vertebral body osteomyelitis and intervertebral discitis, caused by tuberculosis
Who is most at risk of developing Pott’s disease?
Immunosuppressed patients
How will Pott’s disease usually present?
Often there are no systemic symptoms
Clinical presentation is characteristically slow and insidious, presenting with back pain, lower limb weakness and possible paraplegia, with kyphotic deformity
What testing is required in Pott’s disease?
Imaging such as X-ray and MRI are used to image the spine
How can Pott’s disease be managed?
Analgesics
RIPE drugs
Surgery
What are the RIPE drugs for TB treatment?
- R - Rifampicin
- I - Isoniazid
- P - Pyrazinamide
- E - Ethambutol
What surgery can be performed in Pott’s disease?
Immobilisation of the spine
Drainage of spinal abscesses
