What is kyphosis?
A spinal deformity in which there is excessive convex curvature of the spine, most commonly in the thoracic spine
What are some causes of acquired kyphosis?
Metabolic pathology
Neuromuscular conditions
Osteoporosis
Osteogenesis imperfecta
What is meant by postural kyphosis?
This is a form of acquired kyphosis caused by poor posture, and is more common in females than males
What is meant by congenital kyphosis?
This is kyphosis that is present form birth and is caused by under development of the spine
What is Scheurmann’s kyphosis?
This is kyphosis as a result of Scheurmann’s disease, in which vertebrae develop as wedge shaped structures instead of their usual cylindrical shape
How is kyphosis diagnosed?
Diagnosis can be made based on detailed history taking and clinical examination
What other imaging techniques can be used in cases of kyphosis?
Whole spine X-ray or CT to show shape of the spine
MRI can be taken in cases of an abnormal neurological exam
How is kyphosis managed?
Management of kyphosis is usually conservative with some surgical operations available
