What is myositis ossificans?
This is a condition in which there is abnormal calcification of a muscle haematoma following trauma
Where is most commonly affected by myositis ossificans?
Insertions of large muscles of the arms and legs
Describe the histology of myositis ossificans
This shows cellular proliferation, but with evidence of bone formation and zonation
What examinations are used in myositis ossificans?
X-ray
MRI
What will be seen on X-ray in myositis ossificans?
Peripheral mineralisation
How is myositis ossificans managed?
Observation, with intervention only required in cases of symptomatic disease
It is important to wait until maturity of the ossification (6-12 months) before excision, otherwise there is a risk of recurrance
