What are ganglion cysts?
Ganglions are out pouchings of the synovium lining of the joints, which are filled with synovial fluid
What are some causes of weaknesses to the synovium, causing ganglion cysts?
Developmental (Juvenile Baker’s cysts)
Underlying joint damage (Baker’s cysts)
How do ganglion cysts present?
They are usually painless, but may feel tight under the skin
They present as discreet, round swellings, usually <10cm
The skin will be mobile as the cyst is fixed to underlying structures
Where do ganglion cysts usually form?
Wrists
Feet
Knees
How are ganglion cysts managed?
They usually resolve with time, however, aspiration or excision can be performed to reduce them
