Posterior pituitary hormones, thyroid and Flashcards
Where are hormones synthesized in the posterior pituitary?
Hypothalamus
What cells in the hypothalamus synthezise posterior pituitary hormones?
-Paracentricular nucleus
or
- Supraoptic nucleus
Where are posterior pituitary hormones secreted?
Posterior pituitary gland
What are the two posterior pituitary hormones?
- Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
- Oxytocin (OT)
Where is ADH synthesized in the hypothalamus?
Supraoptic nucleus
What is the target tissue of ADH
Kidneys, sudoriferous glands, arterioles
What is the function of ADH?
DECREASES urine production by stimulating the kidneys to return more water back to the blood
What stimulates the secretion of ADH?
DEhydration or high blood osmotic pressure
Where is Oxytocin synthesized in the hypothalamus?
Paraventricular nucleus
What is the target tissue of oxytocin?
Uterus- during labor
mammary glands - after labor
What stimulates the release of oxytocin in the uterus during labor?
stretching of the uterus
What type of process is the secretion of oxytocin?
Positive feed back cycle
*OT levels will keep increasing until baby is removed from uterus (no more stretching)
What stimulates the release of oxytocin after labor?
suckling and hearing baby’s cry -> muscle contraction and milk ejection
