POPULATION NUTRIENT INTAKES Flashcards
WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT AND WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?
The interpretation of info obtained from a variety of methods to identify populations or individuals at risk of poor nutritional status and it includes the ABCD assessments: ANTHROPOMETRIC, BIOCHEMICAL, CLINICAL and DIETARY.
WHY IS DIETARY INTAKE ASSESSED?
- to estimate consumption in individuals/groups
- to evaluate adequacy and safety
- to understand associations between food and health
- to aid in diagnosis and treatment
WHAT IS A FOOD FREQUENCY QUESTIONNAIRE? (FFQ)
A method for retrospective assessment of individual food and beverage intake. Format: food listed in different groups (usually 100-150 items), frequency of intake for each is noted (weekly, monthly etc.). Often used in epidemiological studies.
DESCRIBE THE FOOD RECORDS (weighted/estimated) METHOD.
Method of prospective assessment of individual food and beverage intake. Usually done over 7 days, all food eaten is recorded by an individual and the data is then converted to food codes and nutrients. This method considered the ‘gold standard’ because of its accuracy, but certain groups can still find it difficult to complete and some might alter their diets for the duration of the assessment.
Dietary recall is a method of retrospective intake assessment. What are the stages of MULTIPLE PASS RECALL?
1) QUICK LIST OF FOODS EATEN OR DRUNK (FREE/UNINTERRUPTED)
2) DETAILED INFO (PROBING QUESTIONS ABOUT INTAKE)
3) REVIEW OF EVERYTHING RECALLED (ADD ANYTHING MISSED + LOCATIONS OF CONSUMPTION)
WHAT IS THE UK NATIONAL DIET AND NUTRITION SURVEY?
Annual, cross-sectional survey asking 1000 people older than 1.5 yrs about their eating habits, lifestyle and health. 4 day estimated diet diary completed, physical activity questionnaire, physical measurements recorded + blood and urine samples.
