Parathyroid (Exam 3) Flashcards
Parathyroid
Four Pea-sized glands nestled within the thyroid tissue of the neck
The glands produces and secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH)
PTH
Parathyroid hormone is a hormone released in response to low calcium levels
This promotes vitamin D production by the kidney
Hypoparathyroidism
Associated with hypoparathyroidism are the result of insufficient PTH secretion and the results hypocalcemia
Hypoparathyroidism causes
Trauma or removal of the thyroid gland
Hypoparathyroidism: Clinical Manifestations
Muscle cramps
Irritability
Tetany
Convulsions
C and T signs
HYPOCALCEMIA
Hypoparathyroidism Treatment
Replace PTH
Normalize serum Ca and Vitamin D levels
If parathyroid has been removed replacement treatments are life long
Hyperparathryoidism
Excessive secretion of PTH resulting in hypercalcemia and bone breakdown
HyperParathyroid: Clinical Manifestations
Muscle weakness
Poor concentration
Neuropathies
HTN
Kidney stones
Metabolic acidoses
Osteopenia
Pathological fractures
Constipation
Pathological fractures
Depression, confusion, or subtle cognitive deficits
Hyperparathyroid: Treatment
Reduce levels of calcium
Diuretics
Vitamin D
Surgical intervention
