An area of the incident identified by the IC where injured victims are moved and grouped by acuity due to the potential for further collapse or other eminent danger that could cause additional injuries to victims and care providers. This area is not a Treatment Area although the area may be identified using Triage Tarps with colors corresponding to the patient’s acuity, (Red, Yellow and Green). Whats the goal of the MCI process?
– To rapidly and effectively triage multiple victim incidents while providing appropriate treatment and transportation to local emergency facilities or casualty collection points (CCP).
– also to get patients of scene in less than 10 minutes
– verify what resources are available to the IC from local, state and federal level
Where can you find the controlling base hospital?
MDC in the catchment area or zone, it is identified as the trauma base
What radio systems are we using for an MPI vs MCI?
MPI—– city 800 MHz system
MCI—- RCS system (countywide)
What is a “burn surge?”
The designation of a specific type of incident where the primary patients are burn victims; burn Surge incidents shall utilize UCSD Burn Center.
What is a “Kid surge?”
The designation of a specific type of incident where the primary patients are children (= 14 years of age) requiring specialty care. During a Kid Surge incident, the controlling base hospital shall be Sharp Memorial Hospital.
As the “IC” what should one do, once the incident is upgraded to an MCI from an MPI?
Notify all resources at scene. Announce it on the command and tactical channels.
Who is responsible for the IAP on an MCI?
IC or the Medical Branch Director if established
When should the “med comm” be implemented?
Any time you have two or more patients

Who notifies ECDC that the MCI protocol has been activated and what happens from there?
The IC notifies ECDC of the activation. Once that has been announced, ECDC will contact Station M ( Sheriffs Communication Center) and the Shift Commander.
