NSAIDS Flashcards

Q
Aspirin
Ibuprofen
Naproxen
A
- non selective COX inhibitor
- take aspirin (irreversibly inhibits COX1=decrease risk of blood clots)before you tak Ibuprofen (binds reversibly)
- Reyes Syndrome (unique to Aspirin)=encephalopathy, hepatic dysfunction
- COX1 (constitutional)-cytoprotective prostaglandins=protects gastric mucosa but increases platelet aggregation
- inhibition leads to GI toxicity; decrease risk by concurrently using proton pump inhibitors (decrease acid in stomach)
1
Q
NSAIDS
A
- non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Goal: to prevent inflammation
- MOA: inhibit cycloOxygenase (COX) aka prostaglandin synthesis
2
Q
Celecoxib
A
- selective COX2 inhibitor
- COX-2 (inducible)=inflammatory prostaglandins=recruits inflammatory cells, sensitize skin pain receptors, cause fever
- Inhibition=COX1 causes platelet aggregation and without balance, increase risk of cardiovascular events
3
Q
Acetaminophen
Tylenol
A
- it is NSAID
- different MOA than COX inhibitors, not anti-inflammatory
