Ergogenic Drugs Flashcards
Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids (AAS)
Ergogenic Drugs
• derived synthetically from testosterone
• sex hormone stimulates:
o *Male sex characteristics
o *Growth in muscle and bones
• *Anabolic = muscle-building
• *Androgenic = increased male sexual characteristics
• *Cycling pattern = few weeks on drug, few weeks off drug. Or may use diff types of drugs to increase athletic performance
ADE
- increased BP
- decreased myocardial fn
o Males: decreased sperm count, testicular atrophy, impotence
o Females: menstrual irregularities, masculinization
o Other: male-pattern baldness, mania/depression/aggressin, mood swings
Creatine
Ergogenic Drugs
- possibly effective for improving the athletic performance of young, healthy people during brief, high-intensity exercise such as sprinting (or weightlifting)
MOA
- Important a.a. that shuttles phosphate in skeletal muscle
- primary source of energy is ATP, phosphocreatine can shuttle phosphate–>add to ADP–>synthesize ATP. So more source of energy for use by muscle
ADE
- *Nephritis
- nausea/diarhea
- cramps/aches
Human Growth Hormone
HGH
Ergogenic Drugs - Athletes take recombinant human growth hormone because of its demonstrated effects on body composition (more muscle, less fat) - Clinical trial data suggest that while lean body mass may be increased by growth hormone use, strength and exercise capacity is not. ADE • *Nerve, muscle, or joint pain • *Cardiomyopathy (severe) • *Abnormal shaped head • Swelling due to fluid in the body's tissues (edema) • *Impaired glucose regulation (severe) • *Carpal tunnel syndrome • *Numbness and tingling of the skin • *High cholesterol levels (severe)
