Dysmenorrhea
MOA
-prevents the production of menstrual prostaglandins by decreasing the growth of the endometrial lining.
NSAIDs
Dysmenorrhea
-prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor
- can prevent or alleviate uterine cramping and pain during menstruation
-“little selectivity” COX-1 and 2 is recommended (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen)
MOA
-blocks COX, which stops the production of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid
-want to block COX-2, which generates pro-inflammatory PG
ADE
-gastric ulceration
-acute renal failure
-DEC platelet aggregation (bc COX 1 gets blocked also)
Contraindication
-“Aspirin triad”- aspirin allergy, asthma, and nasal polyps
-can cause anaphylactic shock
