Neuro: Spinal Cord Tracts Flashcards
Name the spinal cord tract:
pain and temperature sensation
the Spinothalamic tract
Name the spinal cord tract:
pressure, touch, vibration, and proprioception
Dorsal column-medial lemniscus (DCML)
Name the spinal cord tract:
voluntary movement
Lateral corticospinal
What does the Spinothalamic tract carry?
pain and temperature sensation
What does the Dorsal column-medial lemniscus (DCML) tract carry?
pressure, touch, vibration, and proprioception
What does the Lateral corticospinal tract carry?
voluntary movement
What does the Hypothalamic tract carry?
sympathetic input to the face
Name the spinal cord tract:
sympathetic input to the face
Hypothalamospinal tract
Where does the first-order neuron for the Dorsal column-medial lemniscus (DCML) tract travel to and from?
Peripheral nerves to medulla via dorsal column
Where does the first-order neuron for the Spinothalamic tract travel to and from?
Peripheral nerves to posterior horn
Where does the first-order neuron for the Lateral corticospinal tract travel to and synapse upon?
Pyramidal neurons in cortex descend, cross over in medullary pyramids, and synapse on the anterior motor
horn of the cord (upper motor neuron)
Where is the first-order neuron for the Hypothalamospinal tract located? Where does it synapse?
Arises from the hypothalamus and synapses on the lateral
horn at T1
Where does the second-order neuron for the Dorsal column-medial lemniscus (DCML) tract arise, travel, and synapse?
Arises from medulla, crosses over, and ascends via the
medial lemniscus to thalamus
Where does the second-order neuron for the Spinothalamic tract travel?
Arises from posterior horn, immediately crosses over in anterior white commissure, and ascends via the spinothalamic tract to the thalamus
Where does the second-order neuron for the Lateral corticospinal tract arise and synapse?
Arises from the anterior motor horn and synapses on muscle (lower motor neuron)
Where does the second-order neuron for the Hypothalamospinal tract arise and synapse?
Arises from lateral horn at T1 and synapses on the superior cervical ganglion (sympathetic)
Where does the third-order neuron for the Dorsal column-medial lemniscus (DCML) tract arise and travel to?
Thalamus to cortex
Where does the third-order neuron for the Spinothalamic tract arise and travel to?
Thalamus to cortex
Where does the third-order neuron for the Lateral corticospinal tract arise and travel to?
there isn’t a 3rd order neuron for the Lateral corticospinal tract!
Where does the third-order neuron for the Hypothalamospinal tract arise and travel to?
Superior cervical ganglion to eyelids, pupil, and skin of face
Name the spinal cord tract:
cell body is in the dorsal root ganglion
Spinothalamic AND Dorsal column-medial lemniscus (DCML)
Name the spinal cord tract:
peripheral nerves –> posterior horn –> decussate at anterior white commissure –> ascend –> thalamus –> cortex
Spinothalamic tract
Name the spinal cord tract:
peripheral nerves –> dorsal column –> decussate at medulla –> medial lemniscus –> ascend –> thalamus –> cortex
Dorsal column-medial lemniscus (DCML)
Name the spinal cord tract:
pyramidal neurons of the cortex –> descend –> decussate at medullary pyramids –> anterior motor horn (upper motor neuron) –> muscle (lower motor neuron)
Lateral corticospinal tract
Name the spinal cord tract:
hypothalamus –> descend –> lateral horn at T1 –> superior cervical ganglion (sympathetic) –> face
Hypothalamospinal tract
Where does the Hypothalamospinal tract fibers decussate?
it doesn’t (lesion is ipsilateral)
