Inflammation 2.1b: Acute Pt. 2 Flashcards
Where does P-selectin come from? What mediates it?
Weibel-Palade bodies; mediated by histamine
What mediates E-selectin?
TNF and IL-1
What do Weibel-Palade bodies contain?
W = von Willebrand factor P = P-selectin
What do selectins bind to on the WBCs?
sialyl Lewis X
What causes Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency (LAD)? What is the inheritance?
integrin defects (CD18 subunit); auto. recessive
What does integrin do?
allows PMNs to bind to endothelium for margination
What are the s/s of LAD?
delayed separation of the umbilical cord, increased circulating PMNs, recurrent bacterial infections W/O PUS FORMATION
What causes Chediak-Higashi Syndrome? What is its inheritance?
a protein trafficking defect –> impaired phagolysosome formation; auto. recessive
O2 –> O2- (superoxide) via?
NADPH oxidase
O2- (superoxide) –> H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) via?
superoxide dismutase (SOD)
H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) –> HOCl- (bleach) via?
MPO
What causes Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD)? What is the inheritance?
NADPH oxidase defect; X-linked or auto. recessive
Name 5 catalase-positive organisms.
S. aureus Pseudomonas cepacia S. marcescens Nocardia Aspergillis
Pts with CGD get infections and granulomas from what general type of organisms?
catalase-positive
What does catalase do?
it destroys hydrogen peroxide
