The blatant ideological bias for the Hitler Youth diminished its attraction to many young people.
Edelweiss Pirates- collection of mainly working-class groups (2000 members by 1939) and grew rapidly in the war years, (20 groups of 100 each in 1945)- during ww2- helped prisoners-of-war
- recognized b their uniform.
Some socially non-conformist behavior like indulging in sex/food and some were actually politically resistant like beating up Hitler Youth patrols and establishing links wit the KPD
authorities grew harsher over time
Initially- warnings like raids
Dec 1942- 740 Edelweiss Pirates were arrested and sent to labour camps.
