History(Post-War)- Adeneaur Flashcards
What were the limitations with the SPD? Why did people vote for them?
Economic recovery/rise in living standards meant enthusiasm/optimism
Berlin blockade/Cold War/ increased fear of communism-meant sympathises with Adeneur
Acceptance of a divided Germany-attractive I.e. The refugees from DDR
Adeneaur’s aims of Germany integrated into a united Western Europe
France was controlling Ruhr+production > Adeneur wanted to gain Allies trust by co-operating over economic issues
Successes: ECSE (1951) - agreement with 5 other counties for common policy on prices >increased production
EEC (1957)>extended ECSE
In return for military co-operation with Allies, end of occupation statue, Germany became a sovereign state in 1955, Saarland was returned to them, Germany became a full member of NATO in 1955
Adeneur had created a stable state
Problems with Western Integration - Adaneur foreign policy failures?
Opposition to remilitarisation
Meant no reunification with East Germany- BRD didn’t recognise it as a state- Adeneur believed East would be attracted to economic recovery in west
Missed chance for reunification -by rejecting Stalin’s treaty for a united, neutral Germany because of fear of soviet control over Germany
Why did it not really matter about rejecting Stalin’s treaty?
Diplomatic relations were restored with Russia in 1955-
But DDR became part of Warsaw Pact
Adeneur would never recognise DDR- only Russia
Follwing 1949 - no real chance of reunification
SPD- what were their aims?why did they oppose the CDU?
Nationalisation of industry- thought erdhard’s free-market policies were hurting Germany
Aim of reunification-thought CDU were hurting these- Petersburg agreement with Allies
