Education changed little traditional school system kept

Change was limited couldn’t adopt reforms in East Germany due to fear of communism

Equal rights under basic law

Women had the right to keep property after marriage/full employment meant women could work without controversy/ growth of household items made home life easier
However women were not paid equally to men/not in higher education/traditional views of women still remained
Social Change Adeneurs
50% of Germans still had one bedroom flat and most people worked 49 hours a week
1962- 45 hours a week/more houses bought/38% owned a car
Increasing youth attraction to rock and rolll/moving from country to City due to higher wages/increased number of cars
Germany becomin more prosperous but 1% of the population earning over a third if the wealth
This society wasn’t as class-based as Britain/landowning Junkers class had gone/Ruhr barons in decline > leaving Germany mostly a middle-class

Aims- integrate wet Germany into Western Europe
Distrusted communist- only be reunited under protection of USA

Unemplment benefits sickness insurance war pensions - social security
House building- sponsored schemes funding for private industry- 6 million houses built by 1961
Overall it was successful
Failure of Adeneur as chancellor in 1960s - presidential fiasco?
Presidential fiasco- 1959 he had the opportunity to be president but rejected it didn’t give him enough power to direct policies and didn’t think erdhard was good enough
Adeneurs failure with the tv company?
Incident damaging his credibility
Setting up of the tv company by Adenauer declared unconstitutional- seen as government trying to centralise power
Adeneurs failure with the Berlin Wall crisis?
1961 election - Berlin Wall crisis- Adaneur failed to reasond quickly or even visit the war and his reputation was tarnished
Had to go into coalition with FDP one condition was that Adaneur had to step down within 4 years

Damage Adaneur- he supported Starus actions against the publishing. F an article criticising government defence policy
Adaneur had to save coalition by sacking Starus and promising to step down following year
