digestive system
The digestive system is also known as the gastrointestinal (GI) system. This system of the body is responsible for intake and breakdown of food into nutrients that fuel the cells of the body. Gastr/o is a combining form that means the stomach, and the intestine is the rest of the digestive tube from the stomach to the anus. The primary function of the GI system is ingestion of food, digestion of this food into its primary nutrients, absorption of these nutrients, and then elimination of the leftover end products of digestion as solid waste.
Gastroenterology
Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function of the GI tract and the diseases that can affect it.
gastroenterologist
A gastroenterologist is a physician that specializes in the study of gastroenterology and the treatment of diseases of the GI tract.
