Intro to ABA Ch. 1 Flashcards
This flashcard deck was created using Flashcardlet's card creator
Empiricism
The practice of objective observation of the phenomenon of interest independent of prejudices, tastes and private opinions.
Parsimony
An attitude that requires all simple logical explanations be ruled out before more complex solutions are considered
Philosophical Doubt
The scientist continually questions the truthfullness of what is regarded a fact.
Branches of Behavior Analysis
- Behaviorism
- Basic research
- ABA
Events that began ABA
- Journal of ABA began publishing
2. Publication of Baer, Wolf, and Risley’s article: “some current dimensions of ABA.”
Assumption of determinism
The universe is a lawful and orderly place in which all phenomena occurs as a result of other events.
Functional Relation
A specific change in one event can reliably be produced by specific manipulations of another event.
7 characteristics of ABA
- Applied
- Behavioral
- Analytic
- Technological
- Conceptually systematic
- Effective
- Capable of appropriately generalized outcomes
6 key aspects of ABA
- Guided by attitudes of scientific inquiry.
- All bx change procedures are described and implemented systematically.
- Not all changing bx is ABA
- Focus on ABA in socially significant bx
- Improvement in important bxs
- Understanding the explanation of bx changes
Experiment
A carifully conducted comparison of some measure of the phenomenon of interest under two or more different conditions in which only one factor at a time differs from one condition to another.
ABA end of chapter
The science in which tactics derived from principles of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for bx change.
Science
Systematic approach for seeking knowledge in the natural environment.
3 levels of scientific approach
- Observation
- Control
- Prediction- if “a” then “b”
Parsimony (Simplified)
That which makes the fewest assumptions
Scientific attitude
- Determinism
- Empiricism
- Experimentation
- Replication
- Parsimony
