Development (1.6) Flashcards
What’re Critical Periods?
period in development where children are particularly susceptible to environmental factors
How does Neurulation occur?
when the ectoderm
overlying the notochord begins to furrow, forming a neural groove surrounded by two neural folds
What does the neural tube form?
CNS
What does Alar plate of neural tube form?
sensory neurons
What does Basal plate of neural tube form?
motor neurons
How is the fetus attached to the uterine wall?
Via the umbilical cord
What is the leading cause of abnormal development and how?
Maternal malnutrition, Protein deficiency can slow growth, lead to intellectual
disability, and reduce immunity to disease.
Rooting Reflex
automatic turning of the head in the direction of a stimulus that touches the cheek (nipple)
Moro Reflex
- Infants react to
abrupt movements of their heads by flinging out their arms, then slowly retracting their arms and crying. - usually disappears after four months and its continuation at one year is a strong suggestion of developmental difficulties
Babinski Reflex
causes the toes to spread apart automatically when the sole of the foot is stimulated
Grasping Reflex
occurs when infants close their fingers around an object placed in the hand.
Difference between Gross motor skills & Fine motor skills?
Gross: large muscle groups, whole body motion, such as sitting, crawling, and walking.
Fine: smaller muscles, fingers, toes, and eyes, providing
more specific and delicate movement
How do gross motor skills progress?
a head to-toe order: Lift head -> stabilize the trunk -> to walk
What is the timeline for social development?
2 - Parallel play (alongside others)
3 - Gender stereotype play
5 - Social conformity & romantic feelings
6-12: Same gender friends w/o romance
Teenage: self-sufficient, gender identified, & Sexual relationships
