Body Composition Flashcards
1
Q
Densitometry
A
hydrostatic weighing
plethysmography
2
Q
hydrostatic weighing
A
- measuring the amount of water displaced
- most widely used in labs
- limitations: need to account for residual lung volume during submersion
- standard error is 2-2.5%
3
Q
plethysmography
A
- calculates density of the body utilizing the amount of air displacement during testing within a specialized closed chamber
- change of pressure is converted to a percentage
4
Q
skinfold measurement
A
anthropometry - all measurements should be taken on the right side sites - abdominal midaxillary triceps subscapular biceps suprailiac chest thigh medial calf
5
Q
Bioelectrical impedance analysis
A
uses an electric current and measures the resistance to the current flow
- no eating or drinking four hours prior
- no vigorous physical activity 12 hours prior
- urinate within 20 minutes
- avoid alcohol consumption 24 hours before
6
Q
BMI equation
A
weight (kg)/ height (m2) OR
weight (lbs)/ height (in2) x 703
7
Q
BMI classification for adults
A
< 18.5 underweight 18.5 - 24.9 normal 25 - 29.9 overweight 30 - 34.9 obesity class 1 35 - 39.9 obesity class 2 > 40 extreme obesity class 3
8
Q
BMI classification for children
A
- between 85th and 95th percentile for age and sex is considered at risk for becoming overweight
- BMI > 95th percentile is considered overweight or obese
9
Q
waist circumference
A
- measures waist to hip ratio
an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease is associated with circumference > 102 centimeters (40 in) for men and > 88 centimeters (35 in) for women
