Anti-Inflammatory/Anti-Arthritis Agents - General Flashcards
1
Q
Inflammatory response
A
- Protects the body from injury and pathogens
- Uses chemical mediators to produce a reaction that helps destroy pathogens and promotes healing
2
Q
Anti-inflammatory agents
A
- Corticosteroids
- Antihistamines
- Immune-modulating agents
3
Q
Considerations for children
A
- More susceptible to GI and CNS effects
- Parents need to check OTC ingredients
- Salicylates should NOT be used for fever/viral infection due to risk or Reye syndrome
- Acetaminophen is most commonly used
4
Q
Considerations for adults
A
- Caution about OTC products
- Caution in pregnancy/lactation: Severe ADE on neonate and mother with salicylates, NSAIDs, and gold products
5
Q
Considerations for older adults
A
- More susceptible to ADE
- Dose adjustment may be needed
- Gold salts are toxic for older adults: if used, dose must be lowered and patient needs to be monitored closely for toxicity
6
Q
Arthritis
A
-Potentially debilitating inflammatory process
7
Q
Auranofin
A
- Treatment of selected adults with rheumatoid arthritis, who have insufficient response to or intolerance to NSAIDs
- Inhibits phagocytosis and release of lysosomal enzymes that cause damage associated with inflammation
