7/21 Flashcards
Myxedema coma
Severe hypothyroidism
decreased mental status
hypothermia
classically characterized by thickened, non-pitting edema of the skin diffusely
Blast Injuries- 1°
blast pressure wave → hollow organ injury
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
thrombotic microangiopathy caused by severely reduced activity of ADAMTS13
characterized by small-vessel platelet-rich thrombi –> thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and organ damage.
Blast Injuries 2°
projectiles from explosion
Blast Injuries 3°
blunt trauma from explosion
Blast Injuries 4°
environmental hazards caused by explosion
Blast Injuries
Blast Injuries
1°: blast pressure wave → hollow organ injury
2°: projectiles from explosion
3°: blunt trauma from explosion
4°: environmental hazards caused by explosion
Most common blast injury: tympanic membrane rupture
thrombotic microangiopathy caused by severely reduced activity of ADAMTS13
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
Mesalamine
chrones rx
Labs will show elevated LDH, elevated indirect bilirubin, normal coagulation studies, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
Laryngotracheitis (Croup) rx
steroids, aerosolized epinephrine
______________ should not be used in croup as they may worsen airway edema.
Albuterol/ beta-agonists
What are some features seen on ECG that can distinguish SVT from sinus tachycardia?
In SVT, no P waves will be seen, R-R intervals are constant, there is no heart rate variation with activity, and rates are generally > 220 bpm in infants and > 180 bpm in children.
What plants are known to cause an anticholinergic toxidrome?
Jimson weed and belladonna (deadly nightshade).
most common cause of testicular pain in boys 2-10-years-old
Torsion of Appendix Testis
The appendix testis, located on the superior aspect of the testicle, is a remnant of the paramesonephric duct. Due to its pedunculated shape, it is prone to torsion resulting in ischemia and eventual infarct.
