10/25/21 Bonus Flashcards
A Colles fracture
- fracture of the distal radius with dorsal and radial displacement of the wrist and hand
- typically originates from a fall on an outstretched hand (FOOSH)
A Monteggia fracture
- fracture of the proximal third of the ulna with a radial head dislocation.
- generally treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the ulna with closed reduction of the radial head dislocation.
Galeazzi fracture
a fracture of the middle to distal radial shaft and subluxation or dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ)
What percentage of patients with a calcaneal fracture will have an associated vertebral compression fracture?
10%
Mnemonic for arm fractures: GRUesome MURder
Galeazzi: radius fracture, ulna (radioulnar joint) dislocation
Monteggia: ulna fracture, radial head dislocation
For rabies exposure concern in previously unvaccinated patients, post-exposure prophylaxis consists of ___________________
- –Initial rabies immunoglobulin 20 IU/kg
- followed by
- –1st dose of the rabies vaccine
- with instructions for
- –repeat vaccine doses on days 3, 7, and 14
Awake and cooperative patients presenting within 1 hour of ingestion of tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) should be treated with ____________
activated charcoal
What is the initial dose of sodium bicarbonate to treat tricyclic antidepressant toxicity?
1–2 mEq/kg.
What ejection fraction is considered normal?
60%
What is the normal range of intraocular pressures?
10 to 20 mm Hg.
What is the most common structural cause of abnormal uterine bleeding?
Uterine leiomyoma.
The treatment for dysfunctional uterine bleeding, now termed abnormal uterine bleeding, in nonpregnant unstable patients involves treatment with ______________
high-dose intravenous conjugated estrogen
Deficits of cranial nerves III, IV, and VI on one side suggest which diagnosis?
Cavernous sinus thrombosis.
This pressor increases cardiac contractility and is the agent of choice in cardiogenic shock with preserved blood pressure.
Dobutamine
It can be used as an adjunct in septic shock in patients with myocardial dysfunction.
After maximal therapy with Levophed, the next best pressor in septic shock is ___________
vasopressin
If vasopressin or epinephrine fail to treat the patient’s hypotension, then phenylephrine could be indicated.
