What is the qal passive participle?
A participle serving as an adjective describing something that has been done to the subject (‘captured’, ‘burnt’, ‘cursed)
What happens when suffixes are added to the qal passive participle?
The participle undergoes propretonic reduction
How is the qal passive participle used?
Predicatively or attributively (like an adjective)
When the qal passive participle is functioning predicatively, it agrees with its noun in gender and number but is always indefinite. How does this differ from its attributive use?
When functioning attributively, it must agree with its noun in definiteness as well
Can the passive participle appear in construct to a noun?
Yes, the noun functions as the agent (the thing that carried out the action, i.e. ‘burned by fire’)
How is the passive participle negated?
With אֵין
What is a disjunctive accent?
An accent that signals a pause in the text
What is a conjunctive accent?
An accent that indicates that the words in question are closely linked in meaning or grammar and should be read together
What is a silluq (׀) and where does it appear?
An accent that appears on the accented syllable of the word at the end of the verse to indicate a full stop
What is an atnah (upside down u) and where does it appear?
An accent that appears on the stressed syllable of the word that precedes the biggest pause in the verse, dividing it into two parts
What is a pausal form?
A word appearing before a large break in the text signalled by one of the major disjunctive accents
What are some of the main changes that happen when a verb is in its pausal form?
- Patah lengthens to qamatz
- Stressed segol in segolates lengthens to qamatz
- Shewa lengthens to a full vowel and takes the stress
Where does the stress shift if the vowel of an unaccented syllable is lengthened in pause?
To the unaccented syllable
