Sequences of future, habitual, modal actions (must, should, can, etc), commands
How does the qal weqatal differ from the wayyiqtol?
The weqatal doesn’t generally begin a new sequence; it typically follows a yiqtol or an active participle
How is the qal weqatal formed?
Waw + the qatal
How does the waw in the weqatal differ from the waw in the wawyiqtol?
The waw in the weqatal has the same form as the conjunctive waw
What are the rules for the conjunctive waw?
- The default is pointed by silent shewa
- Pointed with shureq before a BUMP consonant or consonant pointed with vocal shewa
- Pointed with hatef patah before a guttural
- Pointed with hireq before a yod pointed with vocal shewa (yod quiesces)
Where does the stress (usually) shift in the 2ms and 1cs weqatal?
To the end of the word with no pointing changes
Where is the weqatal usually found?
In direct speech
Why does the pointing for the word מַה change?
It changes depending on the first consonant of the following word
What is the default pointing for מַה?
-מַה (with maqqef) followed by a strong dagesh in the following consonant (conjunctive dagesh)
What is the pointing for מַה when the first letter following it is א, ר, or ה?
מַה is pointed with qamatz with or without a maqqef
What is the pointing for מַה when the first letter following it is ע or ח?
מַה is pointed with segol with or without maqqef
What is the conjunctive strong dagesh?
A strong dagesh appearing at the beginning of a word when the word preceding it is מַה or following a word that ends in qamatz + he, patah + he, or segol + he when the second word is monosyllabic or stressed on the first syllable
