Background to Tyrone’s Revolt
Unstable relationship with anglo-irish settlers.
England controlled Dublin and the pale was not controlled by it.
Anglo-irsih- had armies and semi independent.
Strongly Catholic- sympathetic S.
Gov- some happy to cooperate/some not.
Anglo Irish nobles and status in society.
Land taken from the ‘Munster rebels’ given to NEW English P.
Grew in numbers by 1590s- threatened the position of sitting anglo-irish nobles and their control over irish regions. Like Tyrone.

What did the Earl of Tyrone, Hugh ‘O’ Neil want?
Ulster reason- wanted the crown to grant him formal rule of there and E refused.
This set him on a collision course with the E.
What was the Revolt?
Catholic inspired Revolt in Ulster which escalated into a large scale rebellion against E rule.

Battle of Yellow Ford
830 and 400 wounded.
What were the positives from all the conflicts? Patriotism Cadiz Privateering Trade Development of armed forces.
Increased Patriotism- God was looking favorably on P England.
Cadiz (Essex- individual triumph)- met with anti-C and S pamphlets- celebrations and gave E propaganda plenty ammunition.
English Privateers- Positive LT. Stopped flow of bullion from NW to S and captured over 1000 ships- end of Phillips reign he had realized S could not maintain monopoly over trade.
Financially- £400,000 ultimately.
Activities paved way for East India Company- 1600- formalizing trade with Asia- really benefited Stuarts economy.
Navy and military able to develop and try new tactics to develop armed forces- practice and grew navy.
