Significant Parliament legislation- repealed:
Cranmer’s changes to 1 and 2 B of CP.
Acts of Uniformity- 1549 and 1552
Clergy could not marry
Cranmer’s 43 articles of doctrine for the church- outlaws by P could not become law.

November 1554

A

New parliament sitting. Reginald Pole (C Yorkist banished by H) returned as Papal L. WORKING WITH AN ENEMY- SHOWS HER STENGTH OF RELIGION.
P repealed all of legislation against the Pope under H. Henrician reformation is removed via 2nd act of repeal.
POPE IS NOW HEAD- GAVE UP IMMENSE POWER.

Pole’s polices/actions in Mary’s name.

A

Old C bishops thrown out by E restored and new ones brought in to replace those arrested.

New seminaries established-train priests C- shortage.

Church fabric and services changed back e.g. Latin service books printed again.

New C theology books published to counter-act P publications like Cranmer’s book of Homilies.

1554-58 64 new C books published in E.

Radical P chased out (eliminate problem/threat)- approx. 800 by 1558.

Pope granted absolution to E people and a return to C. Excommunication reversed formally.

Pope, Mary and Parliament- compromise over monastic lands sized and sold by H- WOULD NOT BE RETURNED TO CHURCH. Stopped hedge opposition from P developing.

(Attempted to establish more but couldn’t because of debt/cost and change in society since 1530s- not a great landowner anymore.

Cranmer executed (all 4 were) and Pole made Archbishop.

1556-58 Persecution

A

300 burned- high and low in society.
All 4 burnt as a matter of revenge- Cranmer especially for Aragon (Mother).
Fox book of Martyrs used as radical publication to turn Mary’s policy against her.
Burnings WERE supported by C sections of gentry and ordinary subjects but reviled by P.- Wyatt Rebellion.
