From ranks of landed society and both courtiers and poets. Aim to improve the English Language and the quality of English poetry. Influenced by Humanist ideas ‘new learning’ and in particular by reading Italian and Latin verse.
What did Wyatt and Howard both do and why are they significant?
Both translated the sonnets if Petrach, a 14th c Italian writer ad also began to write their own poetry. Are credited with inventing most common form of sonnet in England- major breakthrough and development.
What did Wyatt write and who might it have been about?
One of his most famous is a love sonnet- Whoso list to hunt’- may have been about Anne Boleyn.
What was Howards specific achievement?
First person to use blank verse (in his translation of the work of the Roman writer Vigil).
Why was sonnet and blank verse significant, give an example?
Became the most widely used literary forms by the Elizabethan playwriters and directly shows a consequence of cultural, literature change and development.
Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets and used blank verse throughout his plays.
What does Shakespeare career show for cultural and literature change and development?
His career in many ways sums up the impact of Humanist thought and the Renaissance on English culture and society. This plays reflected society and looked at moral issues. They changed and developed culture as Shakespeare became one of England’s most famous poets and playwrights.
