In what areas did Catholicism survive?
The West and North-Yorkshire, Lancaster. Further from London (South) the more survived.
How did moderate Catholics survive?
Due to the compromise in the 1560s- 39 Articles 1563, and the 1559 Settlement. Also, due to before 1568 Catholic rebellion Catholic recusancy was turned a blind eye.
What is recusancy?
The concept of people refusing to attend church of England services.
Growth of English priests trained abroad from 1570’s (74) was also a threat as priests had to be Catholic Seminary (Douai-Netherlands) by catholic William Allen and this was mirrored in Rome.
So Priests with Catholic intentions were introduced through trainee work.
They sent around 800 secretly which was supported by Catholic recusants.
Jesuit Priests
Priests who came over as missionaries to trey to keep Catholicism alive and convert people.
Led to tension and plotting.
Many were couragious and willing to die like Robert Campion.
1560’s- low level, disorganized Catholic resistance into someone more organized and determined.
Lancaster Recusnts-1603- 3,516 (mainly missionary priests).
Parts of South East- Dover, Rye and mainly in London.
1580- half of them in London- under authority of Pope.
Minimal, unsuccessful in trying to influence C.
Catholic Nobles
Allow Catholic faith to survive.
Start- many openly like Thomas Percy and Thomas Howard but P in name but C sympathies.
Could protect missionaries- strong in North.
1560s- 75% leading families in Yorkshire C- many MP from landed families turned to these.
William Weston and Henry Garnet- ‘employment agency’ for priest recruitment to be placed in families gentry and nobility.
Normal Priests could not afford this so had to conform so decline of common C.

What did Elizabeth have to do in 1581?
For a gentry 1 shilling was a low fine under the Act of Uniformity, Catholic gentry were able to avid going to church so much so Elizbeth had to implement £20 a month.
What was the Act against Catholic priests?
Ordered them to leave within 40 days (country) or be executed.
