Survival of Catholicism (Edward) Flashcards
Where did Catholicism mainly survive?
The West
What evidence is there the Catholicism survived in the (West)?
The rebellion in Cornwall in 1549 (due to the new prayer book clergy had to use). They wanted the Act of Six Articles, prayers for the dead and services in Latin to return.
People hid traditional vestments from Government Officials but conformed on the outside like the Parish of Morebath-Devon).
Conclusion
The closer you were to London (where the Royal Palaces- most, the court and Parliament) was- the South East the easier it was to enforce Protestantism and monitor it- closer to Europe, Luther and Germany.
The further away the lack of communication made Protestantism hard to monitor and enforce so the more Catholics survived and lived as Catholics. However, when monitored- seemed to conform.
