Why did Frederick have motives to speak up about indulgence controversy? Political and Financial?
Albert of Brandenburg was a political rival, his acquisition of Mainz gave him 2 electorships in the HRE (hotline to pope and v. important role).
Losing money as G flocked to but Tetzel’s indulgences rather than pay for indulgences offered by local priests for F collection of relics.

Why was Frederick important for Luther?
Together- quite a voice, Prince and 2 electorships, status, bishop- significant role and high in hierarchy. Luther a leading academic and Aug monk. Powerful behind F voice and influence and protection abilities.

What was Luther’s objection to indulgences?
- The theological basis for indulgences was questionable. Not in Bible.
- Indulgence selling was harmful to the German people- financial (poor) and spiritually, welfare and education.
What was his intention when creating these?
To provoke a academic debate NOT trigger a religious revolution (devout C). Simulate a disputation as he was taught at university.
What was his target audience?
Wrote in Latin- language of academics, educated, upper class people.
What was his reaction.
Shocked at the spread, only expected a local debate, annoyed. At a broader audience, people contacted him as it got stolen and translated.
