What was Humanism?
An impact of the Renaissance in Europe (during break with Rome), it was an intellectual movement rediscovering Classical Greek and Roman Literature.
Give an example of a Christian Humanist and what he focused on and rejected.
Erasmus- Focused teaching/intellectual ideas on religious faith and rejected excessive ritual and practices- there was extreme superstition in Catholicism.
What did Humanism praise?
The application of ‘reason’ in thinking.
What did Humanism focus on?
The achievements of ‘man’ in the material world and held a positive view of human beings ability to develop rationality and logically.
What was essential in Tudor society that linked to Humanism?
A knowledge of Ancient Greek and Roman literature, history and language became regarded as essential for political, legal and noble individuals- Latin and Greek.
How does Humanism link to schools?
Humanist ideas and classical literature became a key part of schools set up under Edward and Elizabeth (slow burner).
What was it a different approach to?
Thinking, art literature.
How does Humanism link to Catholicism?
Part of the reason for rejecting Catholic Church but Catholic morals were still very strong.
