Challenges to Henry Flashcards
Securing his dynasty (France)
Henry VII had taken crown from Richard I (the Pope Family). Seen as a usurper. So there was legitimacy issues as not all subjects believed he was the true King. He had a claim to the French Throne and throughout the start of his reign tried desperately to invade France as the ‘Renaissance King’ and ‘Warrior King’. To prove himself-inferiority complex.
Before reformation P- 4 parliaments to raise taxation for foreign wars- w/ France.
Primogentuire
Henry was obsessed with having a male heir due to societies views on women.
After Catherine of Aragon was unable to have a male heir Henry from 1529 decided to break from Rome- a male heir as a important pushing factor. So he could marry Anne Boleyn 1533. He finally had a male heir with Jane Seymour.
Succession and Protection of heirs
Once he had a male heir he had to secure him from any threats and legitimacy issues due to the break from Rome.
1st Act of Succession: 1534, Mary a basard and the children of Henry and Anne the heirs. (Elizabeth).
2nd Act of Succession: 1536, children of Jane Seymour (Edward) first in line and the previous unlawful and illegitimate.
3rd Act of Succession: 1543, Mary and Elizabeth back in line but not legitimate but behind Edward (protection for the Tudor dynasty if anything happened to Edward).
Manipulation (End of Reign)
30s and 40s he was manipulated by Reformers and those who were Conservative. This was due to Henry’s increasing worry over what would happen to Edward if he died.
Edward Seymour (Earl of Hertford) Because of personal affairs (Jane) became Duke of Somerset (after H died)- gifts that he would have given (title) and regency can obtain these. Unfulfilled Gifts Clause.
Put men loyal to him in Privy Camber (access to king) to persuade. Regency Council 16 men to rule for Edward ‘full power and authority to make any decisions necessary to give government of the realm - direct access to king (Sir John Gates and Gates brother in law Sir Anthony Denny)
