What did Luther’s friendship with Philip of Hesse lead to?
Luther being drawn into Philip’s personal life.
What happened?
Philip’s decision to commit bigomy and Luther’s (very reluctant- conservative views on sex and marriage) agreement.
What is bigomy seen as?
Less sinful than adultery.
What did this do?
Damaged his standing as a moderate conservative thinker and bad judgement caused religious and political tension.
Who was Philip Melanchthon 1497-1560?
He helped to embed the reformation and converted after teaching with Luther at Wittenberg.
What was Melanchthon’s personality like, give examples.
Different to Luther- an effective conciliator- role at Diet of Augsburg 1530, answered Charles V call for unity.
What did Melanchthon write and what did it do?
‘Loci Communes’ pamphlet 1521- ability to synthesise ideas.
Who was John Bugenhagen 1485-1558?
A humanist and priest, inspired by Luther’s 1520 pamphlet ‘Babylonish captivity of the church’.
What skills did Bugenhagen have, what did he create with these?
Brilliant organisational skills- created 1st model for the Lutheran church, as a standalone church. Known as the Saxon Model.
What did the Saxon Model give to princes and city rulers?
More input/say into managing the German church- more power and control. It look Luther’s idea further.
