Q

Was it free from noble/royal patronage? Read to help support a judgement in your essay.

A

No it was not- The patronage of the arts filtered into schools as drama grew and developed and writings and poetry developed. The nobles were the ones who dominated the schools- males only and so their curriculum was very much dominated by those they have patronage for.
Edward Reign-Stephen Jenyns left money for boys school 12 in Wolverhampton.
Many nobles gave patronage to schools and therefore society in nobility views must have been abided by because it mainly affected them and made them look good in society.
Earl of Leicester- Edmund Spenser, Sir Phillip Sydney- poetry ‘the Faerie Queen’ taught by schools and their writings, methods, shaped society which in turn effected curriculum. ’golden age’ of poetry (and plays).
Royal patronage- her curriculum
Howard and Wyatt- Blank verse and sonnet- taught and develop.
