All favored Protestantism and generally laws were bias. It was a compromise. Allowed education of new P clergy and for new generations to accept Elizabeth Church as only form of Religion in E.

Puritans.

A

The Puritan challenge reformers’ biggest group-threatened the power and position of the Queen as head of church. Dangerous to Eliz control of church.

1563 Convocation of the 39 Articles and passing of Article 29 denying the presence of God un communion.

1564-66 attempts to change injunction rules on vestments and had to appeal to Parker to make bishops conform. Took little notice so he had to give an official order (Advertisements) for clergy and bishops to ask to conform.

1566- Parker suspended 37 London-based Puritan clergy who refused to obey.

1571 William Strickland- amore radical Book of Common Prayer- E had to veto bill. (would have cause conflict C and Moderate P).

1584- Presbyterian MP’s- establish Pres church and replace Eliz CB of P. Stopped by P Councilor Christopher Hatton-speech in Parliament. MP arrested and sent to tower.

Robert Dudley (protected (Thomas Cartwright after fled) and Earl of Warwick- supported so hard to stamp out opposition and 2n archbishop Grindal.

Case For:

A

Remained minority- did not achieve change in any major aspect of settlement 1559-1563
Argument over influential Puritans Choir by Neale not supported.
Attempt by Calvinists of a new national church stopped by 1587.
Aristocratic protectors of Pr views died by 1589.
Also was a catholic compromise too.

Case Against:

A

Views did spread in South and spreading god’s work appealed for its simplicity.
Spread to gentry and landowners away from SE like Suffolk and Essex. Had control over local appointment of clergy and ensure appointments of more puritan influenced people.
Emmanuel College- founded to train Puritan Ministers.
Used increasing availability of printing to produce more articles and pamphlets.
Mainstream P church was also using printing press to consolidate teaching.

Overall:

A

Never seriously challenged structure and control as a minority.
Just chipped away remnants of C elements they wanted rid of.
Religious differences remained all the way through
