Types of Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Combustion of Element
reaction of substance with oxygen gas (O2), produces heat/light and oxides. Formula :A+O2 ->AO (element + oxygen -> element oxide
Combustion of Hydrocarbon
Reaction of hydrocarbon with O2, produces CO2 and H2O. Formula: CxHy + O2 -> CO2 + H2O
Hazards of CO
By-product of incomplete combustion, colourless, odourless, tasteless gas poisonous to body. attaches to hemoglobin and prevents oxygen from binding
Synthesis
Molecules/atoms combine to form larger molecule. Formula: A + B -> AB
Decomposition
Molecule broken down into smaller molecules/atoms. Formula: AB -> A + B
Single Displacement
Reaction of element with compound, metal displaces metal, non-metal displaces non-metal. Formula: A+BC -> B+AC (not every SD rxn will occur)
Activity Series
Metal displaces metal if it is above it, non-metal displaces non-metal if it is above it
Double Displacement
Reaction of two compounds, metals switch places. Formula: AB + CD -> AD + CB
Solubility Rules
i=(s), ss=(s), s=(aq)
Neutralization
DD that involves reaction of acid with base produces salt (ionic compound) and H2O.Formula:HA+BOH -> BA+H2O
