Plant Organs and Functions Flashcards
Root Function
Take in and transport water and dissolved minerals, anchor plant, store carbs made during PS; tips covered by root cap which protects the growing root, secretes slimy substance to reduce friction while growing
Root Structure
Epidermis, Cortext, Endodermis.
Epidermis
Root hairs maximize surface area that absorbs water
Cortext
Transports substances between the vascular tissue and epidermis
Endodermis
Surrounded by a waterproof band that controls absorption of water and minerals
Types of Root Systems
Taproot, Fibrous root, Modified root
Stems
Vary from herbacious (flexible) to hard, woody ones covered in bark
Stem Function
Support upper part of pant, transport water + minerals to leaves, sugar to roots; serves as storage site for food; production of new iving tissue
Leaves
Trap energy and produce sugar (PS), and exchange gas (CO2 and O2)
Leaf Structure
Several layers thick.
- Epidermal Cells
- Palisade Mesophyll
- Spongy Mesophyll
- Veins
- Guard Cells
