Solutions and Solubility Flashcards
Solution
A homogenous mixture composed of at least one solute and one solvent.
Solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent.
Solvent
The medium in which a solute is dissolved. Often the liquid component.
Electrolyte
A compound that in an aqueous solution will conduct electricity. (aq ionic compounds, acids and bases)
Non-Electrolyte
A compound that in an aqueous solution will not conduct electricity. (molecular substance except acids)
Saturated Solution
A solution that contains max amount of dissolved solute.
Unsaturated Solution
A solution that contains less than the max amount of dissolved solute.
Concentration
A measure of the quantity of solute in a solution.
Dilute Solution
Contains a small amount of solute in a given amount of solution.
Concentrated Solution
Contains a large amount of solute in a given amount of solution.
Stock Solution
A concentrated or saturated solution that is available (in-stock). It is usually purchased from a chemical supplier.
Standard Solution
A solution made by dissolving a precise mass of a solid solute or dissolving a precise volume of dilution.
Dilution
The process of decreasing the concentration of a stock solution by adding more solvent.
