The Heart Flashcards
What is the path of the blood from the Heart to body cells and back?
Heart - arteries - arterioles - capillaries - venules - veins - Heart
Where are materials exchanged?
In the capillary network between the blood and interstitial fluid bathing each body cell. They have thin walls to allow for diffusion.
How thick are the walls of Arteries and Veins?
Both have walls too thick to allow for exchange in gases, nutrients, wastes, and hormones with the surrounding tissue. Veins do not have thinner walls than arteries.
What is the heart made up of?
4 chambers, valves, and blood vessels. Has two sides, right and left. It pumps blood to lungs and body.
What is the heart composed of?
Epithelial Tissue (endocardium), Muscle Tissue (myocardium), Nervous Tissue (stimulates heart rate)
What happens in the heart?
Deoxygenated blood is brought to right from body and is pumped to lungs. Oxygenated returns to the left side and is pumped to body cells.
