Q

What is Refraction? What is the criteria?

A

When a light wave travels from one transparent medium into another transparent medium, the velocity of the light waves change. Ray must enter at an angle.

Q

What are the rules for refraction?

A

When light goes from fast to slow the ray will bend toward the normal, when light goes from slow to fast the ray will bend away from the normal.

Q

What are some examples of refraction and why do they occur?

A

Apparent Depth - the light that reflects off the object and refracts when leaving the water is traced backward. Rainbow - each colour travels at a different speed as white enters a new medium, can only be seen if the sun is behind.

Q

What is total internal reflection? When does it occur?

A

When a wave travels from a slow medium to a fast medium at a large angle of incidence, the wave can be trapped in the slow medium. It occurs when the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle.

Q

What are the rules for diverging lens?

A

Ray parallel refracts as if from pf, ray appearing to go through sf refracts parallel, Ray through centre continues

Q

Compare the parts of the eye to the parts of a camera

A

Lenses - bends light, aperture/pupil - opening for light to enter, diaphragm/iris - controls amount of light entering, film/retina - where the image forms
