Growth Factors Flashcards
Internal Growth Regulators
Auxins, Gibberellins, Cytokinins, Ethylene, Abscisic Acid
Auxins
Growth regulators, found in all plant tissue. Functions: cell elongation, stimulate apical bud growth and growth + ripening of fruit
Synthetic Auxins
Cause unwanted plants to grow very fast so they exhaust their carb supply and die
GIbberellins
Promote cell division and elongation, used to stimulate seed germination
Cytokinins
Hormones that stimulate cell division and leaf mesophyll growth
Ethylene
Role in fruit ripening
Absceisic Acid
Inhibitor of growth, promotes closure of stomata and provides resistance to water stress
External Growth Regulators
Geotropism, Phototropism, Thigmotropism, Gravotropism
Geotropism
Regardless of orientation, root grows downward and shoot grows upward
Phototropism
The bending of plants towards light
Thigmotropism
A growth response to mechanical stimuli such as touch or contact (ex. wind)
Gravotropism
Growth response to gravity
