Reflection and Light Flashcards
What are the rules for drawing Concave Ray diagrams
Ray going through C reflects on itself, Ray parallel to PA reflects through F, Ray through F reflects parallel to PA
What are the types of curved reflectors
Concave/Converging, Convex/Diverging
What are the characteristics of images in a concave mirror
Beyond C- s, inv., bet. C+F, r; At C- same, inv., at C, r; Betw. C+F- l, inv., bey. C, r; At F- no image; Within F- l, up, b mirror, v
What are the rules for drawing convex Ray diagrams
Same as concave but appearing to go through points
What are the characteristics of images in a convex mirror
Smaller, upright, behind the mirror, virtual
Solar collector
Sun’s parallel rays directed to food at F
Satellite Dish
Parallel radio waves reflect off dish to the receiver at F
Flashlight/Headlight
Light positioned at F will cause Rays to produce parallel beam
Makeup Mirror
Face positioned between F and mirror produces larger upright image
Security/Side Mirror
Can see wide angles and smaller images are produced
What is light
A wave of electric and magnetic fields
What are the two types of light sources
Luminous: an object that gives off its own light and Non-Luminous: an object that doesn’t give off its own light
Incandescence
Light given off due to high temperature
Fluorescence
Chemical that gives off light when hit by invisible high energy light waves
Phosphorescence
Chemical that gives off light when hit by high energy light waves that stays luminous for long
Chemiluminescence
Chemical reactions that give off light with next to no heat
Bioluminescence
When living things produce light
Triboluminescence
When certain crystals (sugar) are scratched, crushed or rubbed producing light
LED: Light Emitting Diodes
Small lights that don’t get too hot when giving off light made of small crystals which light up with electricity.
Why are LEDs better than other light sources
They don’t waste energy as heat, they don’t use Mercury, they last long
What are LASERS
Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, the light is very intense, the same colour, and stays together as a beam
What is specular reflection
Regular reflection, on shiny surfaces light reflects following law of reflection
What is diffuse reflection
On rough surfaces the reflection of waves becomes irregular. Light tends to spread out in all directions and no clear image is formed.
What are the characteristics of an image
Size- L/s, Attitude- up/inverted, Location- b/i, Type- r/v
