Function of Digestion Flashcards
Macromolecules (Nutrients)
Very large molecules that are made up of smaller molecules linked together. They provide energy to regulate cell activities and to build and repair tissue. They maintain the body’s metabolism.
What are the 4 types of macromolecules?
Protein, carbohydrates (CHO), Lipids (Fat), Nucleic Acids.
What are the three types of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides and disaccharides (Simple) and Polysaccharides (Complex)
Monosaccharides
3-7 carbon atoms (ex glucose, fructose)
Disaccharides
2 simple sugars (ex table sugar, maltose, lactose)
Polysaccharides
Many (more than 2) linked sugars (ex starch, glycogen)
Lipids (Fats)
Made of glycerol and 3 fatty acids, insoluble in water, are the material used to build cell membranes. Job is to insulate and cushion, and store energy.
Proteins
Made of amino acids. Job is to help build and repair tissue, make up enzymes, antibodies. Gives structure and support for blood cells, body tissue, and muscle.
Nucleic Acids
Job is to direct growth and development using chemical codes DNA and RNA.
