Q

Root Pressure

A

As water enters roots it creates pressure (caused by osmosis) which pushes water upward. Water and minerals move into stem and into leaves through veins, increasing the pressure and pushing water up against gravity to rest of plant.

Q

Adhesion

A

Water’s ability to stick /adhere to the sides of xylem due to water’s polar nature.

Q

Cohesion

A

Ability of water molecules to stick to each other (polar nature) due to hydrogen bonds. When one molecule is pulled, the others follow.

A

When water evaporates from leaves or stems and more water moves up from the roots through the xylem to replace it

Q

Transport in the Phloem

A

Translocation= transportation of sucrose through the phloem. It moves down for winter storage and back up to trunk and branches in the spring.
