What is type 1 diabetes?

Hyperglycemia due to diminished or absent insulin production

Destruction of beta cells in pancreas

What is done to treat DM1?
A
Exogenous insulin is given to patients to prevent ketosis, decrease hyperglycemia, normalize lipid and protein metabolism

When does DM1 usually start?
A
In kids 4+, peak incidence at 11-13 y/o

Most common symptoms of DM1?
A
- Polyuria
- Polydipsia
- Polyphagia
- Nausea, weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, dehydration

Lab testing for DM1
A
- Asymptomatic –> 2 different tests w/ 125+ mg/dL
- Symptomatic –> random glucose test of 200 mg/dL

Major considerations for PT w/ patients who have DM1
A
- Coordinate exercise sessions around their meal schedule to avoid hypoglycecmia and optimize exercise tolerance
- Exercise at 50-60% of maxHR
