What is fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS)?
A
- Rheumatology syndrome
- Pain caused by tender points w/in muscles, tendons, and ligaments

Etiology of FMS
A
- Unknown
- Probably multifactorial, links to dysfunction w/in the stress system, ANS, immune system, reproductive and hormone system

Contributing factors to FMS
A
- Diet
- Sleep disorders
- Viral infections
- Psychological distress
- Occupational and environmental factors
- Hypothyroidism
- Trauma
- Potential hereditary

Clinical presentation for FMS
A
- Females > males
- 14-68 y/o
- Widespread history of pain in all 4 quadrants of the body
- Fatigue, memory and visual impairment, sleep disturbance, IBS, headache
- Anxiety/depression

Diagnostic criteria for FMS
A
- Dolorimeter (consistent pressure at 4 kg/cm^2)
- Widespread pain for >3 months +
- Fatigue
- Waking unrefreshed
- Cognitive (memory or thought) problems

Medical management of FMS
A
- Pharmacological intervention based on symptoms, attempt to normalize ANS, hormones, metabolism, etc
- Psychotherapy for anxiety/depression

- Relaxation techniques
- Energy conservation
- Gentle stretching
- Moist heat
- Ultrasound
- Posture and body mechanics
- Biofeedback
- Exercise to tolerance
