What causes lymphedema following a mastectomy?
A
Damage to lymph nodes and vessels during surgery

What causes the accumulation of lymph?
A
- Excess load of lymph fluid
- Inability to transport lymph

A
- Chronic inflammation
- Further injury
- Fibrosis

Clinical presentation for lymphedema
A
- Females > males
- Edema increases w/ dependent positioning
- Usually no pain, there’s a tight or heavy sensation

Stage 1 Lymphedema
A
- Pitting edema that reduces w/ elevation overnight
- No fibrotic changes

Stage 2 Lymphedema
A
- Some fibrotic changes
- Non-pitting edema w/ no reduction after elevation

- Skin changes
- Frequent infections
- Severe edema that is non-pitting and fibrotic
