What is osteoporosis?
A
- A metabolic bone disorder
- Rate of bone resorption accelerates while rate of bone formation slows
- Leads to reduction in bone density

A
- Idiopathic osteoporosis
- Involutional (senile) osteoporosis
- Postmenopausal osteoporosis

A
Occurs due to a primary disease process or as a result of taking certain meds

A
Trabecular bone, but can be seen in cortical bone as well in geriatric populations

A
- Inadequate dietary calcium
- Smoking
- Excessive caffeine
- High intake of alcohol or salt

- Inactive lifestyle

- Low thoracic or lumbar pain
- Hx of compression fx in spine
- Back pain
- Fx w/ little to no pressure
- Kyphosis, Dowager’s hump
- Decrease in height
