Patellofemoral Syndrome CAT Flashcards
1
Q
What causes PF syndrome?
A
Abnormal tracking of the patella b/t the femoral condyles
2
Q
What happens as a result of improper tracking of the patella?
A
Increased and/or misdirected forces b/t the femur and patella
3
Q
Most common movement of patella w/ PF syndrome
A
Pulled too far laterally
4
Q
Factors associated w/ PF syndrome
A
- Common during adolescence
- Females > males
- Direct association w/ activity
- OA
- Patella alta
- Insufficient lateral femoral condyle
- Weak VMO
- Excessive pronation
- Excessive knee valgus
- Tight LE muscles
5
Q
Clinical presentation w/ PF syndrome
A
- Gradual onset of pain
- Follows increase in physical activity
- Retropatellar pain
- Pain worse w/ PF compression or prolonged static position
- Tenderness over lateral patella
- Crepitus w/ compression
- Quad atrophy
6
Q
Labs/images w/ PF syndrome
A
X-ray to rule out fracture, examine anatomy
7
Q
Special tests for PF syndrome
A
Clarke’s sign (pressure to proximal patella + isometric quad contraction)
8
Q
Q-angle associated w/ PF syndrome
A
Increased (normal is 13 for men, 18 for women)
9
Q
PT for PF syndrome
A
VMO strengthening
10
Q
Timeline for recovery
A
4-6 weeks
